There's something almost unmistakably confident about a Great Blue Heron. They move with the deliberate pace of something that knows exactly where it's going, never rushed, never uncertain. This one seemed especially sure of itself, striding across the crest of a grassy hill as if it owned the morning.
I happened to be parked just below the rise, which gave me an unusual perspective. Instead of looking across at the bird, I was looking up. The horizon disappeared, replaced by soft clouds and open sky, making it feel as though the heron had climbed out of the marsh and into the clouds themselves. Between the complementary blues, warm earth tones, and the bird's unmistakable silhouette, the scene had a quiet elegance that stopped me in my tracks.
