A summer storm rolled in off the coast, and I stayed close to my car, hugging the exposure of an open beach with nowhere to hide from what was coming. In the frame you can just make out my shadow, and my tripod's, thrown across the sand by the headlights behind me. I wasn't the only one out there. Further down the shore, a lone figure kept walking the waterline, silhouetted for a split second by a strike that lit up the entire sky in three directions at once.
There's something about a storm at night that empties a place out and fills it back up with something else entirely. The rules that hold during the day—stay out of the water, watch for lightning, listen for the whistle—mean nothing once the beach is dark and the sign is the only thing left standing guard. What's left is a kind of quiet danger, beautiful precisely because no one is supposed to be watching it happen.
